From Detroit, Michigan to San Jose California in Nine Days-The Best Route for Your Road Trip

The scenario:

Doris recently graduated from college and got a job in Michigan. Though, she will begin with four months of training at the corporate headquarters near San Jose, California. She stated that she wants her car there for weekend sightseeing. Therefore, she wants to drive.

She wants to see some things along the way but is on a budget and can’t afford more than a week on the road.

The solution:

Friday night – Leave downtown Detroit, drive to Elgin Illinois (north of Chicago), stay night at a hotel.

Saturday – drive to Mitchell, SD, visit Mitchell Corn Palace, stay the night at hotel.

Sunday – leave at 7 am, drive to De Smet & visit Ingalls Homestead. Leave by 11, lunch in car, drive to Pierre – State Capitol & visit. Drive to Keystone via Badlands loop with stop at Wall Drug, spend night in Keystone at K Bar S Lodge.

Monday – see Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park wildlife loop, and Mt. Rushmore. Stay another night in Keystone.

Tuesday – drive to Buffalo, WY thru Lead, Deadwood, Spearfish, Devil’s Tower (if you have time). Stay night at a hotel.

Wednesday – enter Northeast entrance of Yellowstone thru Beartooth Highway. Spend the night in Yellowstone.

Thursday – do Yellowstone stuff, spend another night at a hotel.

Friday – leave early, stop in Blackfoot for Idaho Potato Museum, drive to Salt Lake City see State Capitol and Temple Square, spend the night at a hotel.

Saturday – drive to Carson City, Nevada and see the State Capitol. Spend the night at a hotel.

Sunday – drive to San Jose, passing by Lake Tahoe so possibly do something there. Also, you will pass right through Sacramento, see the State Capitol., check into corporate housing, Airbnb, etc. You’ve arrived at your destination!
